Sometimes you’ll see it with posts on Facebook. People give quotes from books like “The road less traveled” by M. Scott Peck. They act like such a book is “Christian” even though he contradicts the Bible all through his deceptive “masterpiece”. He says, “We must develop our own religion”. He also claims that there are many paths to God. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me.” One of them is a liar. They can’t both be right, after all. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me.”
Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me.”
Another heretic that’s quoted is Daniell Koepke, “Your anger is valid. Your hurt is valid. Your sadness is valid. You have every right to feel the way you do”. She is the self-described founder of the “Internal Acceptance Movement.” It’s all about you and especially your “feelings”. It’s another way for you to be your own God. You get to be “like God”. You get to decide right and wrong for yourself.
These are just the few examples I’ve seen recently in my own Facebook timeline. But this idea comes in many forms and it’s constant. Some are overt and antagonistic while others are much more subtle. That’s why you must be constantly on guard.
It’s the same playbook that’s been used since the very beginning. “You get to be God”. There is no need to change it because we, as humans, keep falling for it. We don’t always fall for it consciously, but if you listen, it will come out in lots of people around you. A Freudian slip if you will.
This goes on all the time in churches across America. Someone will be talking about a situation they are going through and Bam! They are exposed. Listen for who they keep the focus on? You’ll hear it if you listen for it. It’ll sound something like this, “It’s not fair” or “That’s just how I feel”. It doesn’t matter what the truth is because “feelings” are the truth now. It could be concerning a spouse, “It doesn’t feel the same. I just don’t love him/her anymore.” It could be concerning a job or boss that is giving them a hard time, “They never recognize me and all that I do. I deserve more”. Maybe it’s about a coach, “They just have their favorites. I’m the best player on the team” or “My kid is so good but that coach is just out to get them.”
Now sometimes these statements are true. But nevertheless, please realize that is no excuse to keep the focus on yourself, your feelings, or your sense of fairness. You are still required to be an ambassador for the One you represent: Christ. You may need to just suck it up and love people in spite of themselves or the circumstances. Occasionally you may need to move on and find another job in a graceful way. Maybe quit that sports team and find something else to do. But to make a huge scene and cause drama is never the option for a follower of Christ.
If this is you, don’t worry. We all can slip into this mentality. After all… it’s only natural for us. We were born with a sin nature and must read and meditate on God’s word to get our hearts right. You can call an audible and change course right now. Just ask for forgiveness and it will be freely given. You can start over right now, but be on guard because this will always be a struggle.
The truth contained in God’s word isn’t about “positive” energy, “positive” vibes, “positive” feelings, or any other feel-good notion. We don’t need to “be who we are”. The whole problem is who we are. The “best me” still isn’t good enough (Romans 3:10). Our problem is the fact that we, as humans, are screwed up and need fixed. Deep down we all know something isn’t right. We broke God’s law and there is a price that must be paid. What you have to decide is are you going to pay it yourself or are you going to let Jesus pay it for you. That’s what the whole Bible boils down to.
The truth will always come out.
People do expose themselves and their own prejudices, but there is another side to this equation. Eternal truth will always make itself known. These truths will always emerge and make you confront them in one way or another; they are self-evident truths. These truths can’t be stopped from emerging because they are part of the fabric of creation.
Some of these eternal truths include the idea that we shouldn’t commit murder or cheat on our spouses.
Many times these eternal truths will be unwittingly shared by people who hate the idea of any eternal truth at all. If you listen, you’ll even hear it from people that are devout atheists. God will sometimes use the most antagonistic people to proclaim His truth. I’m not just talking about a person who doesn’t believe in God, I’m talking about the people who hate that you have the audacity to believe in God yourself. I’m speaking of the people who try to stop you from telling others about your faith – a faith they don’t even believe exists in the first place. The same people who will use anything to get you to stop, from the court system to the HR department at work, will push and share their own faith in nothing. These individuals are not simply content to just let you go on in what they perceive to be stupidity or naivety, they want you to submit to their ideology. They will try to intellectually , attack, ridicule and pound you into submission for believing in what they sarcastically call a “fairy tale”.
These people are used on a regular basis by God to shine Himself into this world.
Watch for when these people, who ridicule you for believing in any truth, unwittingly prove there is a “deep magic” like CS Lewis wrote about in, “The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe”. You see, every time an antagonistic and devout atheist believes that theft, murder, lying or rape is wrong, they are proving these truths are built into our DNA. Where does ‘right” or “wrong” fit into a worldview that doesn’t have a Creator? Who defines these terms? There is no logical reason for an atheist to hold any of these positions.
Let’s take just a few minutes to follow the evolutionary logic from that worldview. There was a random explosion (big bang) from nothing, which formed the 4 basic forces of nature and all matter. Then over millions of years, a bunch of dust floating in space gradually coalesced and, as it got denser from the pull of gravity (one of these 4 basic forces), it changed into stars which then died and created the heavier elements like Carbon, through fusion, from helium and oxygen. These same stars were reborn and now the heavier elements slowly formed planets. Our planet happened to be at the perfect distance from the perfect star (our sun) in the perfect place and was bombarded with ice from space, which produced water. This perfect watery soup randomly created a few protein molecules that just so happened to form amino acids and the building blocks of life. After much trial and error, starting with single cell organisms and millions of years of chance, we eventually got to great-grandpa ape. Finally, all the weaker life forms were weeded out through millions of years of “survival of the fittest”.
Wow, that was a mouth full! I will also hit the subject of evolution and creation much more in depth in the future. But suffice to say, evolution will never lead to an understanding of “right” and “wrong” because the core of evolution says everything is relative! If everything is relative can anything be trusted?
Two final “thoughts”…
ONE – People expose themselves all the time if you know what to look for. The next time you hear a politician tell you what they stand for, look at their actions to see what they “actually” believe. Look for Christians (maybe yourself) that say, “Jesus is Lord” but then have an obsession with “self” or “fairness”. It could reveal itself in attitudes about your spouse, boss, teacher, coach or opinions on socially hard issues. Any time you put your opinion above God’s Word you are exposed.
Confront the enemy at every turn. Always check God’s word for yourself and verify it. Never blindly follow anyone. This includes your pastor, your parents, your teachers or friends. Study God’s word for yourself. You are called to give a defense. Search the scriptures for yourself – Acts 17:11.
TWO – Eternal truth shines through regardless of proclamations to the contrary. Every time an atheist friend tells you anything about compassion for those less fortunate or they express ANY opinion about ANYTHING being “right” or “wrong”. That’s not “survival of the fittest” now is it? You’ll notice this doesn’t fit with the world view they espouse, that everything is based on chance and anything goes. Please understand, this is God’s truth shining through, and in spite of, their ignorance.
Be on guard for your own personal struggle with truth and take up your cross daily. If you find yourself drifting into a selfish mentality, just confess it and ask God to forgive you.
Now zip up that zipper and put the toilet paper in the trash because people are watching you!
